Queer Arts 2016

And What? 2016

In 2016 And What? was the new kid on the block! A pan-London Queer Arts Festival featuring 130+ artists and more than 25 events in 15 venues throughout September and October of 2016. The programme covered the North, South, East and West of the Capital. And What? brought you everything from Visual arts to Circus, International drag Superstars to LGBTQI film and Performance Art to Dance. We reached more than 6,000 people.

Highlights included our first year presenting American superstar drag-idol Peaches Christ's 'Grey Gardens', the first annual queer circus an cabaret night 'The Pink Bucket: List' hosted by Reuben Kaye, presenting Kate O'Donnell's 'Hayley and Me' , a queer edition of Paula Varjak and Dan Simpsons 'Worst. Date. Ever' and of Spoken Word London and the 'Bearded Brutes' exhibition by Mark Leeming. So much fun, so many artists we haven't mentioned in venues that bridged traditional arts spaces like Richmix and Chelsea Theatre to the SHAFT at the Brunel Museum and Geffrye Museum. What an opening year!

Queer Arts 2017

And What? 2017

And What? Queer. Arts. Festival. is a platform to show the work of Queer and LGBTQIA+ artists, makers and producers, to encourage different spaces for artistic conversation, open doors to venues and provide new experiences for audiences across London…. and by golly did we go for it in 2017.

Our programme refocused to be almost entirely made up of world premieres and/or London firsts, including brand new: theatre, music, live art, club nights, contemporary drag, youth engagement projects, exhibitions, circus, cabaret and some really out-there ‘experiences’. Things happened all over London, in traditional spaces like theatres and galleries; Queer spaces, like clubs and back rooms; public spaces such as cinemas and more unusual corners, nooks and crannies, from churches, A FREAKING live-art NATIONAL TRUST PROPERTY to public swimming pools. We supported national and international artists, emerging and world famous. And What? welcomes some of the most exciting UK based queer voices around like Alexander Geist, Steakhouse Live, Rosie Wilby, Nando Messias and Darren Pritchard/Cornel Simons. Alongside established artists such as Neil Bartlett, and internationally recognised performers and makers like Peaches Christ/Jinkx Monsoon (doing their Hocum Pokem parody of Disney’s Hocus Pocus), Bruce LaBruce (first UK exhibition - YASS GAWD!) and Himherandit (youth engagement programme).

From Drag Race to super NOW. That was us babes!

In total there was 30+ events, supporting more than 150 artists, and a little somethin’ somthin’ for everyone.

We hope you jumped in (literally, you could at Squlech an immersive pool experience) and enjoyed the slightly murky waters of And What? Queer. Arts. Festival. 2017.
