What to expect…

Performance avalanche and avant guardian David Hoyle invites you to join the crème de la crème for an evening of thrilling pedagogy.

In THE PRIME OF MS DAVID HOYLE, the legendary performer takes on the persona of esteemed educator Ms David Hoyle, whose academy for girls takes pride in offering amusement, provocation and inspiration for dark times.

Ms Hoyle feels things deeply. She is never wrong. And she has the loyalty of her girls.

Ms Hoyle will wax electric on themes including but not limited to truth, beauty, art, charisma, discipline, team spirit, fascism and common sense. Expect an up-close-and-personal multimedia extravaganza in which acerbic and radical wit combines with a deep love of the outsider.

Ms Hoyle is joined on stage by ‘teaching assistant’ and lingering 60s icon Simone Simone, and graduates of the prestigious Carnesky’s Finishing School and Duckie Homosexualist Summer School for young queer performers.

Produced and directed by cabaret critic and producer Ben Walters, THE PRIME OF MS DAVID HOYLE takes its cue from The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Muriel Spark’s iconic 1961 novel about a charismatic teacher, later adapted into a 1969 film starring Maggie Smith and a 1978 TV series starring Geraldine McEwan.

It shall be an education.

LONDON PREMIERE

And What? are proud to be invited to programme the headline slot for Bar Wotever, and what a corker we have for you….

Hayley and Me by Kate O’Donnell

Hayley Cropper appeared in our living room three times a week. Although well-loved she was slightly over looked.  Bringing Hayley back into the limelight, this cabaret explores Hayley’s Coronation Street storylines and how they relate to Kate’s own journey. Taking a nostalgic look back at this piece of trans history, expect a splash of music from the era, visuals, interaction and a very icon anorak.

We work with some of the best LGBT & Queer Performers in London, UK and the World and encourage newcomers and beginners with great attitude and things to say. We champion a big group of Residential Performers who are invited to our stage time after time, just because we totally adore them and their craft. Every Tuesday we also host the Community News for and with our London LGBT & Queer Community.

LONDON PREMIERE

Composers Michael Betteridge and Anna Braithwaite have teamed up to create a radical new music-theatre piece, staged by director Nick Blackburn. The production premieres two new works, one from each composer, that set the stories of people facing life-changing diagnoses to a musical backdrop, using the subjects’ own words as their source text.

The composers have drawn upon an eclectic set of influences from both avant-garde and popular culture to create pieces for solo voice, clarinets, tape and percussion. Michael’s work interrogates attitudes to safe sex in the LGBT community by telling the story of a twenty-one year old man living with HIV. Anna’s piece uncovers universal themes of ageing, memory and identity in the issues affecting the daily life of a woman living with dementia.

These are humourous and poignant musical portraits, told ‘In Their Own Words’.

A one-woman queer comedy about masculinity, horses, Dr Freud and DIY

A cowboy, a DIY expert and Sigmund Freud walk into a stable…

In this hilarious queer solo show, Eilidh MacAskill bares all to swagger through masculinity, machismo and misogyny in a fully-frontal, yet thoughtful meditation inspired by Freud’s theories of sexuality and how they continue to influence us today.

As Freud would have it, this masculine-identifying lesbian is clearly missing something important. Is trying on a series of macho identities a clear case of penis envy, or is that a load of horseshit? A stripped back show for anyone who likes their psychoanalysis heteronormative and their cowboys in the buff.

“Wonderful edgy gender fun” Kate Bornstein, Gender Outlaw

“A DIY horse whispering of gender identity…incredibly likeable and enjoyable… genuinely thought-provoking” Lewis Church, Exeunt

Eilidh MacAskill is a Glasgow-based live artist creating work for both adults and children with a current focus on gender and queerness.

Jamal Gerald (FADoubleGot)

Inspired by a black gay experience, this autobiographical piece focuses on the ups and downs of pride and self-loathing. Through storytelling, spoken word and live art, Jamal Gerald develops the courage to tell his story of how he learned to celebrate his individuality, by embracing the slurs that were thrown his way, and how to wear labels without shame.

“Jamal Gerald is, intensely, fiercely himself on stage, in a show that highlights the idea that the way the world is structured forces some ways of life into a form of survival. And all that noise can be given the finger.” – EXEUNT

Length of show: 50min-1hr

Joely Fielding (This is your sex life)

LONDON PREMIERE

An autobiographical performance that borrows from live art, storytelling and cabaret – This Is Your Sex Life invites you to join Joely in opening the big red book of her sexual history – from being 10 years old with a fetish for rope, through to what happened (maybe) last night.

In 2015 Joely started to trace her sexual history, writing up the stories that felt significant. She found that in different ways these experiences had been, and were continuing to affect the kind of sex that she was having (or not having). So we’re going to put some music on and have a clear out. We’re going to go through the old stories, the newer stories, and have a think about what Joely might want to try and chuck out, and what she might want to keep for her sexual future.

Performed with James Rowling
